Volume 1, Issue 3 August 2003

Welcome

Hello Dear Subscribers,

In this issue, I thought you might like to see one of the floral designs one of our students has created.

We receive many photos of floral designs from our students. They either e-mail or post their photographs of their designs to us.

This is a lovely basket design from one of our students, featuring deep claret red and white roses, white hyacinths, mauve wisteria and trailing foliage stems.

Ribbon to tone in with the wisteria has been crisscrossed around the handle to give a unique effect.

A bow in matching ribbon has been used to add the finishing touch to this design.

The flowers are arranged naturally to suggest a delightful just picked from the garden look

We will be featuring selected designs from our students in upcoming issues of our newsletter.

Choosing a Basket for your Floral Designs

When choosing a basket select a size and style to suit the arrangement you are going to create.

Choose a small dainty basket with a light weave for delicate flowers such as rosebuds, lavender and Singapore orchids.

Select a large basket with a heavier weave when using larger flowers such as gerberas, dahlias and chrysanthmums.

Some baskets have the handle going from left to right. Others have the handle facing from the back to the front.

Always position the basket so the widest part is facing towards you for the front of the arrangement.

Fresh, or silk and dried flowers are equally effective used in basket designs.

Flower and foliage stems are inserted into florist foam. The foam needs to sit at least 2.5cm (1") above the edges of the basket to allow the side stems to be inserted into the foam.

If using a deep basket fill it with crumpled newspaper first and then place a piece of tissue on top of the newspaper tucking the edges in and down around the sides of the basket.

If using fresh flowers, soak florist foam in water. Place the foam in a flat plastic florist bowl and secure in place with a plastic clip on guard or pot tape.

The bowl can then be wired in place as explained below.

Instead of a plastic florist bowl, you may prefer to use a piece of plastic sheeting such as a garbage bag on top of the paper to prevent the water from the wet foam soaking through .

The foam can be wired in position by inserting a long 22 gauge floral wire through the top weave of the basket, through the foam and out through the opposite edge of the top of the basket.

Twist each wire end firmly around itself a couple of times and cut off the excess wire.

We teach different basket designs in our floristry course including step by step easy to follow instructions for a flower girl or gift basket and a fruit and flower basket.

Once you learn the basics of flower arranging, which are fully explained in our course, you will be able to create many different styles.

If you are not already one of our students, enroll today, and you will soon be on the way in creating your own artistic floral designs.
