Modern Christmas Arrangement

Hello Dear Subscribers,

Well, it's that time of the year again and hasn't it gone fast?

I hope you have done most of your Christmas shopping and are looking forward to the holidays.

I always buy my presents throughout the year and avoid the last minute rush.

If I see something nice that I know someone would like, I buy it and put it away.

All I have to do at Christmas time is to remember where I put them, as I have a few special secret hiding places!!!

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Christmas and all the very best for 2007.

For the December newsletter for this year, I decided on a modern Christmas design.

I had some lovely glittery foliage with long trails of pale green beads, and wanted to incorporate them in a tall arrangement to show off the beads to their best advantage.

I decided on a silver and green theme and used green proteas, silver leaves, pods, glitter and silver balls arranged in a tall glass vase.

Green and silver balls were placed in the glass container.

Glitter shredding was added to give a touch of sparkle to the design.

The materials I have used in this design are:

Tall stems of foliage
5 proteas
Silver leaves
3 large pods on stems (these were sprayed silver)
Silver and green balls
Frosted bauble clusters
Silver curly stems
Green glitter shredding
Tall glass container
Flat number bowl and clip on guard
Florist dry foam (Dry foam for use for artificial materials)
22 gauge wire x 45cm (18") long
Floral Tape

1. Remove the small hangers from 4 balls.  Place them on top of each other, glue them together with a hot glue gun and insert them into the glass container. Place the foam in the number 6 bowl, secure it in place with the clip on guard and place it on the top of the glass container. You can secure the bowl on the top of the container with a glue gun, blue tack or criss cross two to three pieces of narrow pot tape over the top and down on the sides of the container for about 5cm (2").

2. Insert the tall foliage stem in the left side of the back top of the foam. If extra support is needed, cut a few 22 gauge wires in half to measure 23cm (9") long and place two together behind the end of the stem, wind the right wires twice around the stem and then bring them straight down together. Two wires are used for firm support for heavy stems. Cover the wires with floral tape for about 7.5cm (3").

3. Cut another piece of foliage to the desired length. Wire, tape and insert it in the right corner of the foam.

4. Cut the proteas to the desired length and position them in a zigzag sag effect along the centre front of the arrangement as shown.

5. Wire each one of the 3 large balls with a long 22 gauge wire x 45cm (18") long. Insert the wire through the small wire loop at the top of the ball and slide the wire across, so their are equal amounts each side of the ball. Bring both wire ends straight down together and wind the right wire twice around the stem. Cover the wires with floral tape for about 7.5cm (3"). Cut the wires to the desired length and insert them in a group in the right side of the arrangement.

6. Cut the stems of the pods the desired length and position them on the left side of the arrangement.

7. Cut the silver fern and pieces of the long foliage to the desired length. Wire and tape in the same way. Insert them around the edges and throughout the centre of the arrangement.

8. Insert the frosted bauble clusters in the arrangement.

9. Insert some curly stems around the edges.

10. Spread the glitter, shredding out with your fingers and place it around the base of the arrangement to cover the foam.  Wire hairpins - Cut a few 22 gauge wire into pieces measuring about 7.5cm (3") long and bend them into hairpin shapes with equal size legs.  Insert the hairpins to hold the shredding against the foam.

11. Drape some strands of the glitter shredding throughout the arrangement.

This arrangement is briefly explained. In our Floristry Diploma Course, we explain each step in detail with diagrams for each step and measurements on how long to cut each stem and exactly where to position each placement.
