Fresh Flowers For The Wedding Cake

Hello Dear Subscribers,

You can decorate a wedding cake beautifully using fresh flowers.

If you use the same type of flowers for the cake that as used in the bridal party's flowers, they will all tie in together beautifully.

In this three tiered wedding cake, roses, lisianthus and dainty sprigs of misty have been used.

It's best to start at the bottom layer and work upwards.

Make sure that the flowers have not had insecticide used on them.

Cut the end of the stems on a slant and give them a drink in water for several hours before using them.

As the stems in the bottom layers are not placed in foam, for freshness if possible, arrange them on the cake just before the wedding reception.

Method

Cut the flower stems to the desired length. Wipe the stems over with a damp cloth.

Place the flowers around the bottom layer of the cake. If using different shades, position them evenly around, adding dainty pieces of filling flowers to extend out around the edges.

Repeat this step with the second round.

For the top of the cake to give a nicely rounded shape, it's best to arrange the flowers in florist foam.

Soak a piece of florist foam in water for several minutes and place in a small flat container (a jar lid is ideal for this). Secure the foam in place with narrow pot tape, crisscrossing it over the centre of the foam and down the sides of the container.

Cut the flower stems to measure about 7.5cm (3") long. Place the largest flower in the centre and insert the other flowers evenly around, cutting the lower stems slightly shorter if necessary.

Scatter matching rose petals on the table around the cake.

This floral design is briefly explained. In our Floristry Diploma Course, we explain each lesson in detail. There are step by step diagrams for each step, measurements on how long to cut each stem, exactly where to position each one and a colour photo of each completed design.
