I do hope you are enjoying your week.
Gerberas are popular flowers used in floristry. They are native to South Africa and are a member of the daisy family.
The most sophisticated member of the daisy family, gerberas have large flat flower heads which grow on long stems.
Gerberas come in a wide range of color including pink, red, yellow, orange, apricot and white. The flower heads can range from 8 to 12cm in diameter. There are also mini gerberas that are much smaller.
Gerberas should be picked or purchased when fully open.
Gerberas can be used in all sorts of floral designs and they have a relatively long vase life.
With proper care and conditioning they can last up to a week or even longer.
Cut the ends of the stems on an angle and place them in warm water- preferably with a flower preservative in the water or you can use a teaspoon of bleach.
Give them a long drink in a cool place for several hours before arranging them.
The stems can be wired vertically with a long 22 gauge wire to give extra support to the flower heads.
In the Floristry Course you will learn about the names of flowers and foliage often used in floristry, how to care for them so they last well and how to arrange them step by step into stunning floral designs.
